COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Fundamentals of Animation is the first step to getting a basic understanding of the fundamentals of Animation. This workshop is structured and aimed at teaching a solid foundation of animation principles as well as a basic workflow within Autodesk Maya. Fundamentals of Animation is perfect for those who are are interested in the field of Animation.

The goal of Fundamentals of Animation is to ease into the idea of animation, and slowly build a solid understanding of the 12 principles of animation.

CURRICULUM:

  • Introduction to the 12 principles of animation and how they apply to the assignments
    Kick off first assignment – Bouncing Ball 3 different weight characteristics (1 week assignment)

    Animation Demonstration on Bouncing Ball.

  • Critique and review of Bouncing Ball assignment.
    Kick off second assignment – Pendulum and overlap (2 week assignment)
    Animation Demonstration on Pendulum and overlap and how the 12 principles come into play.
     
  • Critique and review of Pendulum and overlap assignment.
     
  • Critique and review of Pendulum and overlap assignment.
    Kick off third assignment part1 – Ball and tail (2 week assignment)
    Talk on character performance in animation

    Animation Demonstration on Bail and tail

  • Critique and review of Ball and tail assignment.
    Kick off third assignment part2 – Focus on the tail part of the animation exercises.

  • Critique and review of Ball and tail assignment.
    Kick off forth assignment part1 –  Bipedal jump (2 week assignment)
    Talk on the subject of weight shift and Poses to pose workflow.

    Kick off forth assignment part2 –  Bipedal jump (focus on spacing)

    Kick off fifth assignment –  Side step (2 week assignment)
    Talk on the subject of mechanics in animation.

PREREQUISITE:

We recommend having a basic understanding of Maya before attending Fundamentals of Animation. See our Maya Training for classes designed to teach you the software.

Fundamentals of Animation is limited to 8 students to allow for maximum individualized focus. We encourage a comfortable, collaborative environment so that students can learn from their own assignments, the critiques of others’, instructor demos, lectures, and guest speakers.
