COURSE DESCRIPTION:

“CREATURE FEATURE: Concept, Structure & Scene”

DESIGN and DEVELOP your own ‘CREATURE FEATURE’ in this intensive 12-Week course with industry veteran Derek Thompson. In this class, we will approach both Creature Design and Story Development through the thematic lens of Personal, Social, Moral, Political, & Environmental issues.

The CREATURE FEATURE workshop includes both lecture and in-class assignments that involve Concept, Structure, and Scene work. Student work will be critiqued by the instructor and workshopped as a group.

PREREQUISITE:

This course is rooted in VISUAL STORYTELLING, so students should be prepared to produce DRAWINGS and DESIGNS to help express their ideas.  Intermediate to Advanced Drawing skills are recommended, and a portfolio submission is required.

There is 1 HOMEWORK requirement PRIOR to beginning the course:

1):   Find and print out 3 IMAGES that represent  something that scares you, unsettles you, or gives you the creeps. It’s IMPORTANT that these images aren’t general, but should relate to something SPECIFIC and PERSONAL that you’ve experienced in your life.  Please be prepared to discuss the specifics in class.

*Creature Feature is limited to 8 students to allow for maximum individualized focus. We encourage a comfortable, collaborative environment so that students can learn from their own assignments, the critiques of others’, instructor demos, lectures, and guest speakers.
